Huaning Pottery — The Living Heritage of Yunnan

Historical Origin

Huaning Pottery originates from Huaning County in Yunnan, China. Its history dates back to 1396, when ceramic master Che Peng from Jingdezhen (China’s most renowned porcelain capital) traveled to Ningzhou’s Huagai Mountain. Discovering the region’s abundant white clay and natural glaze materials, he established the first kilns and introduced advanced ceramic-making techniques.

By the Qing Dynasty (Kangxi–Qianlong period), Huaning Pottery reached its peak. The New Yunnan Gazetteer of the Republic era recorded:
“Among Yunnan ceramics, Jian Shui and Ningzhou are the most famous.”

Today, Huaning is recognized as one of China’s important traditional pottery centers.

Craftsmanship & Production Process

Huaning Pottery is made from local white clay and follows techniques inherited from Jingdezhen. It is classified as high-temperature glazed pottery.
The traditional process includes:

Clay Selection – Using local fine-grained white clay.

Preparation – Carefully proportioned clay and glazes.

Shaping – Wheel-throwing or hand-building, preserving the marks of craftsmanship.

Decoration – Carving, stamping, or surface finishing.

Glazing – Multiple glaze layers for depth and variation.

Firing – High-temperature firing that determines the final color and texture.

Each piece carries the natural variations created by fire, glaze, and handwork.

Glaze Colors & Aesthetic Features

Huaning Pottery is known for its rich and expressive glazes.
A local saying goes: “Ningzhou pottery fires the finest greens.”

Representative glaze styles include:

Celadon / Sky-blue glaze – Smooth, jade-like, with fine crackles.

Pale green glaze – Soft and elegant, ideal for tea ware.

Gold-speckled glaze – Natural metallic flecks produced during firing.

Kiln-change glazes – Natural gradient and flowing effects created by high-temperature reactions.

The overall look is colorful yet refined, with a warm, jade-like finish.
